Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school in Sandy Springs, Georgia has over 600 students currently enrolled! Our students are so sweet and engaging, but some don’t have the same foundation as others. We have really hardworking families; however, a majority don’t have much flexible income.

I’m the librarian in our media center and I see how hard the students and teachers work each and every day!

We are a Title I school which means we have a large concentration of low-income families with children attending our school. We have a 24% mobility rate. About ¼ of our student population transfers out or in sometime during the school year. We have a 39% Hispanic population with 31% showing as English being their second language. Our college and career ready performance index (CCRPI) score is currently a D which is not where we hope to be! These are some of the reasons that our students need your support.

My Project

I would really like more Spanish books for my school's library. We have a small collection of Spanish books, but I would like to grow that collection. We have many Spanish speaking/reading students in our school so our Spanish book sections needs an upgrade.

Our students would love more choices.

Students use the Spanish book section mostly for "independent reading". We have some ESOL teachers that have asked for more choices for this group. The students love to read new books and show their friends books that are Spanish or bilingual books. Students really like engaging books! They also like to share that they know more than one language. This would let them see more options in our library. They deserve more choices.
