This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Life in my Kindergarten classroom is fun, challenging, and so rewarding. Students are building pre-reading skills, learning numbers, values, how to build community, how to be a leader, and are exploring the scientific world around them.

My students are native Spanish speakers who are navigating the normal avenues of Kindergarten along with the added challenge of learning a new language.

100% of my students are ESOL and many come from incredibly challenging financial situations at home. Despite these barriers, they show up smiling and are as eager as can be to get reading.

My Project

With the materials requested, my students will gain those early literacy skills that are so necessary for children to become successful students and contributors in their community. The headphones will build our listening center so that students can strengthen their auditory comprehension skills. The toobaloos will build student fluency by allowing the children to hear themselves practicing reading. Traceable letters will give students an added opportunity to advance fine motor control, as well as improve letter recognition and formation, for both reading and writing. The gathering rug will be used as a creative work space for large and small group lessons.

Funding this project will make a huge impact on these students' lives because they will discover the fabulous world that unfolds through reading.

Strong literacy skills are one of the biggest predictors for student success. Having the tools and resources to build those literacy skills early will help ensure that these students can and will attend college in the future. Let's get these Kindergarteners reading! :)
