Hurricane Michael devastated our town, but not our spirit! Even before the storm, we were a Title I school with 100% free breakfast and lunches. Now our needs are even greater. Our small, neighborhood school has become a family, now more than ever.
Hurricane Michael changed the lives of every student in our city.
We are trying to create a school environment as close to normal as we can. We continue to work hard to meet student basic needs as we always have, feeding students, washing their clothes, allowing them to take showers and brush their teeth at school. Some things we have not been able to make normal for the students for a multitude of reasons. Changes in our population, our landscape, ruined basic classroom items, and outdoor equipment that the wind swept away and even items stolen in the aftermath of the storm.
At our school, every teacher is asked to take on a very special student to mentor for the school year. Throughout the year, teachers meet weekly with this special student. They spend time together doing things like eating lunch, talking, taking walks around campus, and reading.
This project would allow each mentor teacher in our school to present their special student with a new book.
They could read it together and then the student can take it home to share with other family members. This would be a wonderful gift that could be enjoyed time and time again. Each reading will increase fluency, student confidence, and instill a love of reading.
