Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Their home environment is not a culturally diverse one and they come from a low socio economic income background. We are a Title I school where all students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students have many factors against them but you wouldn’t know it by talking to them. In spite of these disadvantages they’re eager learners. Their backgrounds don’t allow them many experiences outside of their neighborhood. Which is one reason why I love the listening center for them. They absolutely love listening to reading as it takes them to places beyond their world. I strive to make the classroom a fun learning environment for them.

My Project

My students love going to the listening station center, however most of the books on CD that I have only come with one book. They crowd around the one book while the CD is playing. To me, the importance of each child in that small group, having their own book is that they’re able to see the words and follow along as the CD is playing. They will be able to see the words and get to hold the actual book. There’s something special that happens when the child gets to hold their own book and turn the pages. The child begins to take ownership of their reading this way.
