My students need Bilingual Feeling Buddies, Lots of Love Babies, puppets and Baby Doll Circle Time to learn to self-regulate their emotions. By providing these materials, we will be able to support their social emotional growth in a preschool setting.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students are 3 and 4 year olds and attend our preschool because they qualify for special education services or are considered "at risk" for school failure in the future. We work every day in our classroom on social emotional skills so that these children have a strong foundation for all of their future learning. We love the process of helping these students learn how to identify their feelings (more than mad and happy!), self-regulate, and use friendship skills.
Many of our preschoolers have never been in a group setting before, some have low language skills, and all are learning to navigate sharing and turn taking.
We use positive behavior supports throughout our classroom, including visual schedules, warnings of transitions, individual schedules for those that need them, positive language, and an awareness of individual students' needs. We teach students behavioral expectations in a proactive manner and we create a schedule that is supportive for success. We specifically teach problem-solving skills so that daily preschool interactions can be successful.
It is amazing to hear our students use their skills independently! They will get a timer when there is a sharing issue, or suggest turn-taking-even without an adult helping them!
My Project
Conscious Discipline is an evidence-based framework for developing social-emotional and self-regulation skills in young children. It was developed by Dr. Becky Bailey and has many tools that allow teachers and caregivers to assist young children in growing their skills in understanding their feelings, managing their feelings, and sharing their feelings with others.
One of the strategies in Conscious Discipline is to "be a STAR"-Smile, Take a deep breath, and Relax".
The items that I am requesting in my project are all items that will help young children understand their feelings on a deeper level. Each item has a connection to Conscious Discipline and will allow young children to explore their feelings, label their feelings, and share their feelings with others. The Feelings Buddy Kit includes 2 sets of Feeling Buddies stuffed people, allowing students to learn to label and identify their feelings and the Feeling Buddies Curriculum, providing the adults with the guidance we need! Baby Doll Circle Time teaches the children how to be caring and have empathy for others.
We began using the "STAR" strategy last year in my preschool classroom, and I know that it works! I was feeling some frustration at the end of a long day, and a student said to me, "Teacher! Be a STAR!" I told her she was right. I should "Smile, Take a deep breath, And Relax"!
I am looking forward to expanding our Conscious Discipline strategies this year, with Baby Doll Circle Time, Feeling Buddies, and Shubert books. Growing our school family skills will help our students in the long run, as the latest and continued research has shown that the "soft skills" of Social Emotional Learning are the truth teller for future success.
