My Project

Books can be mirrors, reflecting who we are and what we know about the world we live in, and books can be windows, helping us to view and understand lives that are different than our own. For books to succeed at being mirrors and windows, they must reflect the diversity and complexity that exists in our community and beyond.

My goal with this project is to provide the students of my school with a variety of high-quality, award-winning literature highlighting Black history and culture.

When students of color don't see themselves represented in books, they internalize negative feelings of exclusion and inferiority, as if their lives don't matter. And when white students don't have the opportunity to read books representing diverse cultures, their susceptibility to harmful stereotypes and prejudices increases.

This project will increase the diversity of the library's collection, providing more culturally responsive books that can serve as mirrors and windows.
