This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Children in families with incomes below the poverty line are less likely to read every day than are children in families with incomes at or above poverty. This is a sad fact, and my students are living it every day. Our school is made up of over 500 students, and unfortunately, almost all of our students fall into this category.

Our kids come to school every day eager to learn.

Sadly, as literacy levels drop worldwide, we, as educators, are encouraging kids to develop a strong reading habit early on in life. While many believe that so long as kids are reading something, they will reap the rewards, but research shows that kids really benefit from reading non-fiction material. Our students do not have access to the amount of non-fiction reading texts that is recommended in the Common Core State Standards. Hopefully my project will change this for our students.

My Project

Non-fiction texts can be a good source of inspiration for children. A moving biography, for instance, can motivate kids to work hard to overcome obstacles; and a text about space may stir a life-long passion for astronomy.

Works of non-fiction are chock-full of interesting facts with which our students may not otherwise become acquainted.

Even if our students are already familiar with energy, a non-fiction text about how our family homes are powered by energy will provide interesting details that they may not already know.

When children read non-fiction they become acquainted with text features that do not normally appear in works of fiction. Indexes, time-lines, maps, headings, and subheadings are a few examples of features commonly found in non-fiction texts.

Reading of any kind serves to expand a child’s vocabulary, but exposure to non-fiction will introduce new words that might not normally be found in works of fiction. When children are exposed to new ideas or subjects, it often prompts further questions concerning the material. Non-fiction texts will whet our students' appetite and inspire them to want to learn more!
