The non-fiction materials that you donate will compliment the lessons that I teach. The non-fiction comprehension materials will support differentiated instruction allowing me to address the different skill levels that are typical of a second grade class.
Having a nonfiction reading comprehension learning center that would further expand their learning would be wonderful!
My students attend a New York City public elementary school. It is a large school in an ethnically diverse community. Their families come from many different countries. The parents are very supportive of the students. Many parents volunteer their time to help out in school. I encourage my students to have their parents come into class and in a semi-formal presentation describe their work, what they do each day, why it is important to the community and the economy. I view these sessions as very motivating. The students enthusiastically ask questions and love to follow up by reading books about the professions they have heard described. They are enthusiastic learners who love new and challenging activities.
My Project
In previous years I have seen how these nonfiction books generate an active interest in reading. The children begin requesting more books. By increasing their word building skills they become better readers. The more practice they get with reading activities the easier it becomes for them.
Using the word building activity center my students can build and sound out new words and do word scrambles. They will be exposed to new words and their word bank will grow.
My students need interesting texts like the Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers Series that would encourage them to read and investigate interesting and informative text. They need to have new insight into topics that they are not familiar with or exposed to. These reading activities selected will inspire them to read and learn new and interesting things.
Reading nonfiction books opens their minds to the wider world by revealing topics they where not aware of previously.
Each student reacts to different material that happens to strike their interest center.
