My Project

State-sponsored surveillance, technology gone awry, the spread of disinformation, and the use of gaslighting in order to control citizens are all issues that have been raised by my curious and intuitive special education students in our Title I-funded, special eduation school in our Special Act school district--even before mentioning 1984, George Orwell's classic novel. Their awareness of the world around them, and their desire to leave the world a better place than they found it, inspires many of our in-class discussions.

Reading 1984 in the safety of our classroom will give my students the ability to become better critical thinkers as they explore how media, language, and technology shape the world in which we live.

Studying 1984 gives kids a roadmap to analyze the relationship between truth and power. It gives them the opportunity to analyze language in order to understand how it can be used to influence others. Reading 1984 also helps solidify and expand media literacy skills. Book-based discussions on distinguishing legitimate news and trustworthy news sources from "fake news" will help students develop stronger media literacy skills.
