My Project
We want to bring hydroponic gardens into our chemistry classroom so students can explore the chemistry behind sustainable farming and water quality. Using hydroponic kits, grow lights, and tools like pH and EC meters, students will conduct experiments that connect directly to real-world science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers.
They will adjust pH and nutrient levels, measure nitrates and phosphates, and test dissolved oxygen - the same tasks that professional chemists, agronomists, and environmental scientists perform every day.
By rotating through team roles such as chemist, engineer, horticulturist, and data scientist, students will experience the work of different STEM careers while applying classroom concepts in meaningful ways.
Instead of just reading about chemical reactions, students will watch them unfold in living systems they nurture themselves. This project turns our classroom into a hydroponics lab where chemistry is active, exciting, and deeply connected to the world beyond school.
Chemistry can sometimes feel abstract to students, but this project makes it hands-on, exciting, and career-focused. By monitoring nutrient solutions, balancing pH, and testing plant growth in hydroponic systems, students will practice authentic scientific investigation. They will see firsthand how chemistry is the foundation of sustainable food systems and environmental problem-solving.
The equipment funded through this project will serve students for years, making hydroponics a permanent part of our curriculum. With these tools, every chemistry student can explore how their learning connects to real jobs in science and technology.
