My Project

Our class has requested materials to grow a garden based on what they learned reading the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, as well as going to farmers markets with their families. They see how many homeless people we have in our neighborhood, and we discuss kindness and helping the elderly.

Their goal is to have a garden to share at school, home and take to senior centers.

We have been able to experiment with a couple of different hydroponic systems and they have been amazing.

We would like to continue with hydroponics/microgreens growing and could use some refills on supplies and systems.

Getting children involved in growing sprouts and using hydroponic systems is the fastest way for them to learn about plant cycles.

Results begin happening in days in the sprouting trays. They don't have to wait a long time to get something poking out of soil. Students can be eating fresh sprouts in as little as 7 days.

Once they know how it’s done, the process will be turned over to them: letting them select and measure out seeds for sprouting, soak and rinse seeds on their own, letting them harvest. They learn responsibility and get an introduction to biology.

For more advanced students - sprouters can get into an important part of the scientific process — observation and record-keeping.

Larger seeds make it easy to identify the parts of the seed — seed coat, embryo, cotyledon — and kids will be encouraged to sketch the parts they see in their journal. (This goes along with our writing program - labeling during writing lessons.)

Thanks for helping to keep learning fun!

Ms. S. will only receive her materials if this project is fully funded by August 7.
