Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of the students I work with are considered to be high poverty/low-income. Ninety percent plus are Latino. They do best in settings where they can use their senses to gather information because they are mostly visual, kinesthetic, auditory learners and are most successful in learning new material when it is hands-on, creative, artistic or lab-based.
My students crave knowledge, new learning experiences and question everything, but they do not always know where or how to find the answers!
Having tools to make science fun and challenging, all while being able to reach their individual educational needs and help my students indulge in their inquisitive nature. When I am able to provide an authentic learning experience, where I see the lightbulb go off and my students reach that 'aha moment' and are excited to share their findings with anyone who will listen, I know I have been a successful educator.
My Project
The STEM Grow Lab is a one-of-a-kind food science program located inside our public high school. It's a pilot program with a mission to transform a former unused shop space into an AgiScience Lab.
The STEM Grow Lab is the new era of vocational training translating science, technology, engineering, math, agriculture and the relationship with the environment into real life skills.
This is a program geared to harvest the NextGen Farmer of our country. With the grow lights, water pumps and ph meters we receive, we will be able to incorporate three Tower Gardens into our lab which will give all students the opportunity to get hands-on experience with and learn more about hydroponics and growing their very own food in a sustainable way. These new Grow Towers will not only give students the opportunity to learn about plant production and sustainability, but will teach vocational skills that can be utilized outside of the classroom.
