This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What is most gratifying about my 9th graders is they are very curious and invested in building a sustainable future. My students really thrive when they are engaging in inquiry-based learning and hands-on activities that are relevant to their unique experiences. My students are lacking direct access to a space in NYC to start a garden because our school is located in a congested commercial and residential neighborhood which is surrounded by sidewalks. Despite the limitations of our surroundings, my students are resilient in the face of adversity.

Recently, when I brought mini hydroponics to share with my students, they were able to start different herbs in the hydroponic system and later transfer the herbs to soil.

They were overjoyed to bring home their herbs to use when cooking meals for their families. However, due to limited supplies, I was only able to complete this awesome hands-on project with 6 students out of 120. My goal, through raising funds, is to share with all of my students projects that will not only expose them to relevant experiences but will also prepare them to be analytical thinkers and problem-solvers in college and beyond.

With these materials, students will be able to grow their own food, practice urban farming, and engage in project-based learning to create a more sustainable future. This experience will enhance their education as well as inspire them to look at science from a different perspective.
