Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The scholars in our Room are an enthusiastic group of 4th graders who enter class each day with a handshake and a smile. They come to their community ready to learn and grow together. This year, they will be focused on growing their academic discussion skills, and are very intent on learning how to actively listen to one another's ideas.

Our school has been growing as a PreK-8, and is recognized in our district for the wonderful progress we have made within our community.

Many of our families are first or second generation immigrants and most speak a second language other than English at home. The area, while low socioeconomically, is rich with the support of enthusiastic, ready-to-learn children and their families.

The environment on our campus is focused on maintaining high academic rigor and expectations while nurturing students as caring citizens. Our classroom mirrors this school focus; my scholars work to be mindful in their schoolwork as well as their ability to be their best selves.

My Project

Each day, my students come in from recess, sweaty from play. Soon after they enter, they ask for a drink from the water fountain or pull out a plastic water bottle that they will soon toss out.

Students notice the need to stay hydrated, but aren't able to do so in a way that feels exciting as well as sustainable.

Providing each student with a reusable, eye catching water bottle will excite them to take ownership of their water intake. It will also teach them how to be mindful of how much waste they produce as reusable bottles will cut out the need for one-time use bottles.

Finally, these bottles will allow students to hydrate consistently throughout the school day instead of waiting for recess or permission get up to visit the water fountain. These particular bottles are also spill proof, so that they won't cause a mess if accidentally knocked over.
