Hydrating, Feeding, and Keeping the Donettes Dance Team Cool

Help me give my students fans, water bottles, hair ties, healthy snacks, and sunscreen for the dance season. These tools will allow our dancers to focus on their skills by keeping them cool, hydrated, and well-fed.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

There are several practices in the year when the students practice outside, making sunscreen highly important for the health and safety of our students. In our classroom, the fans will help cool our dancers down during our lengthy (usually two to four hours) after-school practices. Currently, we have one fan for 29 dancers to share; adding two more would increase the airflow in our classroom significantly, especially during the hotter months of the school year. Hair ties will also be essential for our dancers during the hotter months. Our dancers can cool down faster by tying their hair up at practice. At SBHS, we are lucky enough to have water bottle refilling stations fully equipped with clean, purified water. By providing reusable water bottles and an extra boost of hydration with the Gatorade packets, we eliminate the need for our students to purchase water or bring a canteen from home, giving them one less thing to worry about before practice. On top of that, our dancers can take the reusable water bottles to dance competitions, workshops, and other field trips throughout the school year. Lastly, the snacks would make a huge difference on our team. We often tell our dancers, "Food is fuel." Providing snacks before practice ensures that our dancers have enough calories to sustain our intense workouts and practice schedule.

Keeping our students hydrated and well-fed is one of our top priorities this dance season.

When our students are not worried about their hunger, hydration, or body heat, they are more likely to be focused throughout dance team rehearsals. Making sure our students are comfortable is essential in motivating them in a high school team sport.
