My Students
My students attend a Title I school in the heart of New York. They are special needs students and English language learners, which makes learning challenging. My students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, with all of them qualifying for free lunch. The school population is very ethnically diverse as well. We serve a rising number of Hispanic and African students. Needless to say, students come to school with their own unique set of struggles and successes.
One thing the students have in common, though, is their love for school and learning.
I hope to create an environment at school and at home that meets their unique needs.
My Project
Being part of a middle school girl's team helps my students in the classroom and after school. It helps to improve interpersonal skills and builds teamwork. When the girls come to practice they learn the technicalities of playing softball and basketball, which are serving, hitting, blocking, and more, they will also have the opportunity for social interaction. The water and sports drinks are vital in keeping these girls hydrated, safe, and able to keep cool. Keeping the energy drinks low in sugar will help improve their health and weight. the snacks will help give them that extra energy to keep moving. My students will lose more water and calories than normal through sweat and respiration due to the fact that they are getting back to practice after the COVID-19 related break.
Getting back into playing softball and Basketball will help my students become acclimated to running and playing sports, but it must be done in a safe manner.
Being able to play sports in middle school is helping my students learn how to be active, especially after being sedentary for over a year.
