Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In the last couple of years, roughly 66% of high school students have dropped out of school in New York City.
Since 2009, from the time that I got the opportunity to coach here, 100% of my student-athletes have graduated from high school.
My name is Mr. G. I serve as the Boys Varsity Head Coach at APRHS. One of the main hurdles that I have encountered as a head coach yearly is finding funds for our teams.
The population that I coach is very resilient. They are not your average high school student-athletes. The majority of my student-athletes have extra responsibilities that entail babysitting little siblings, babysitting grandparents, potential after-school employment due to family financial hurdles, and most importantly, they still need to meet their academic daily goals. Academics are always top priority in my program!
My Project
Our basketball program practices for 25 hours a week. Our daily practice schedule starts at 6:30am to 8:35am. After that our student-athletes are in class being academically challenged from 8:45am to 2:20. After school practice begins at 2:30pm everyday and ends at 4:30pm. On game days, games begin at 4pm and conclude at 6pm unless we go into overtime. By the end of the day, our student-athletes are exhausted.
The majority of our athlete come from lower class working families and Gatorade/hydration viewed as luxury.
As a physical, health, and sports educator, I am aware of the importance of proper hydration. Water is not enough considering the hours our young adults are logging daily. Please assist them in performing at their best, not only in the sport they play but in the classroom as well.
