Huzzah! Young Actors Bring the Renaissance to Life

Help me give my students hands-on Renaissance theatre materials, like archery and axe throwing targets, craft foam, and acrylic paint to design characters, build props, and perform Renaissance history for a live audience.

Ms. Glover Joe Lee Johnson Elementary School
Austin, TX Grades 3-5

My Project

Theatre is one of the few places where history, literature, and craftsmanship come alive through action. This fall, my Theatre students are studying theatre history alongside 5th Grade's Renaissance Unit, and I want to give them the materials to turn that learning into performance.

For many students, this project will be the first time they've ever built a prop, brought an original character to life, or performed for an audience beyond their classroom.

This project brings together theatre history, playmaking, and technical theatre into one hands-on experience. Students research Renaissance-era stock characters, like jesters, heralds, or royals, and then develop and rehearse their own versions in class, building skills in character analysis, improvisation, and ensemble storytelling. At an elementary school, theatrical opportunities are rare, and at a Title 1 school, they're even rarer, so projects like these are often a student's only chance to build these skills before middle or high school.

At the same time, students apply set and prop design principles by designing and constructing their own shields, crowns, wands, and potion props with craft foam, acrylic paint, wooden dowels, ribbon, and jewels, developing crafting and planning skills. Students apply these same technical skills at a larger scale by building the archery and axe throwing targets, gaining experience with interactive set installations that most elementary students never get close to.

All of this culminates in a live performance showcase, our Renaissance Faire, where students perform as their original characters and share design and creativity with the whole school and neighborhood community. My goal is simple: give students who don't see themselves as performers, designers, or historians the chance to be all three, and to walk away with real skills, real pride, and a real audience who saw what they made.
