Energetic, creative, playful, bossy, and leaders are some of the adjectives I would use to describe my students. My (3) classrooms have an average of 20 students between the ages of 11 and 12. The diversity of students ranges from Whites, African American and Hispanics. Most students come from a one parent household, where 85% receive free and reduced lunch. I have a mixture of ESL, students with 504 plans and IEP's. What I love so much about my students is that they are eager to learn, but need updated resources. "All Are Welcome" is a book that I have in my classroom. One of my students was eager to see and read how this book represents her differences and her community strengths. She wanted to know if I had any other books like this one. My response was that I will try to get more for her and her peers.
The pandemic has closed schools for many of our students.
Libraries have been closed. Students have not had access to a book or magazine in 9 months. Without books in the hands of our students, they are prong to suffer learning loss.
Reading is like food to the soul. Without it, it's hard to survive. The Scholastic Storywork Magazines will be that food for the students. Scholastic Storywork combines authentic texts to digital resources to ignite student's engagement and raise their achievement in other content areas. This magazine will be a perfect solution for remote learning. Those students who have went without readable materials for 9 months will enjoy the richness of this magazine. With the ready-to- go lesson plans and the online resources like the video, student can work at their own pace. More importantly, the magazine offers differentiative instructions for students who are 2nd language learners. A text-to-speech and other translations are available. Wow, what an resource for these students. The nutrients are all there in this magazine.
The Scholastic Classroom Library will be used as mentoring text for my weekly read aloud, as well as resources for students to read books that are both engaging and reference to their cultural background.
This inviting classroom library will encourage each student to read, even the reluctant readers. With the wide ranges of genre, the classroom library will offer those "just right" books for each student.
