Putting diverse books in the hands of students will make a difference by showing students they are not along, and that they can overcome any obstacles. For example, a student who has been separated from their parents because of immigration laws could read about other students who have been faced with similar challenges will see themselves as overcomers. I strive to create a print rich classroom where students are able to choose books that will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. Research shows that the best way for students to become better readers is by reading more. Placing these books into their hands will not only enrich their lives, but help them to become stronger in reading. This project will only help enrich their experiences. As part of my Readers/Writer's Workshop model, these rich-text books will encourage students as seeing themselves as writers, authors and illustrators. I want them to see themselves as life-long writers.
