Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach "tough" kids. Labeled "tough" because they’ve been neglected in this school system. They’re so hungry for growth in academic and personal achievements. Help me remind them everyday, how important they are to this world, by providing them with opportunities they have never experienced.

“I am somebody And I won’t be stopped by nobody I got my fist in the air And movement in my feet I got respect for my people But it starts with me!” My 2nd graders (now 4th graders) took this chant to the next level.

We said it every day and before we knew it, the whole school was chanting the same words -It’s like they started a movement and it spread like wild fire. My deep east Oakland community needs not only to understand that they are important, but be reminded every day. They deserve more than the little they get. Their stories matter, because, well, they matter. As a teacher in Oakland, the work is so intense it is easy to feel alone. My “tough” kids have been labeled for being far below grade level, not being able to control their behaviors, and not knowing right from wrong; yet, they are burdened with their history of people that have given up on them and not given them opportunities to strive in their very specific and individual needs.

My Project

My students will be using the iPad Air, Osmo Gaming System for iPad and Multipurpose Headphones during centers at the "innovation station" to serve their innovative craving with technology. My students will use Playmags Magnetic Tiles to continue the creative thinking for the ones who work best with kinesthetic learning, also in centers. My students will use the Printer to express their learning and become teachers and leaders in their community by sharing all their findings and knowledge with the community around them. They also will be given the opportunity to produce exceptional projects.

My 3rd graders have the potential to develop ground breaking discoveries and inventions through the use of technology, if they are given the resources to do so.

They have yet to experience a classroom with such materials and have very little computer skills to even understand the potential of their own knowledge. Engagement is tough in deep east Oakland schools, so with the presence of just one of these items, my students will already be centered in their learning and their individuality.
