My deep east Oakland community needs not only to understand that they are important, but be reminded every day. They deserve more than the little they get. Their stories matter, because, well, they matter. As a teacher in Oakland, the work is so intense it is easy to feel alone. My "tough" kids have been labeled for being far below grade level, not being able to control their behaviors, and not knowing right from wrong; yet, they are burdened with their history of people that have given up on them and not given them opportunities to strive in their very specific and individual needs.

About my class
