My Students

Hurricane Harvey has devastated the lives of the children I teach. Their homes were destroyed and it was a very stressful time for their families. Some of the kids have moved back into their rebuilt homes, but some are still living in hotels, apartments or with family. Parents have endured the stress of dealing with contractors and paying astronomical expenses.

In Fourth grade, the students study the world around them through non-fiction books about how weather affects the planet.

The teachers usually depend on the students having resources at home or being able to go to the public library to help fill the gaps in the classroom libraries for the extensive array of weather topics the children want to explore. The Hurricane wiped away the home libraries of a lot of these children, and parents are far too busy with rebuilding to take them to the public library.

Please help me purchase new books to supplement the Fourth grade classroom shelves so these children can stretch and grow their minds beyond the daily struggles around them.

My Project

The Fourth Graders at our school survived Hurricane Harvey in real life. Now they are studying weather events around the world and how other communities are impacted.

Researching in groups gives the students the opportunity to express their own experiences and relate those to the experiences of others globally.

Learning about the weather empowers them with knowledge and working together makes them feel the strength of community.

Hurricane Harvey washed away a lot of the outside resources these children had. By purchasing these books to have in the classroom, they have resources and reading available to them on a daily basis.
