My students attend a Title 1 school in Brooklyn, New York.
Our area was severely devastated by the hurricane, and some of my students have been forced to leave their homes. They are from many diverse backgrounds, mostly minorities. My class is an Integrated Co-Teaching classroom, which includes students with special needs into the general education class. With all of the challenges they face on a daily basis, their grades qualify many of them as the lowest one-third city-wide.
My Project
With our new iPad, which was graciously funded by donors like you, we are able to explore learning in a whole new way. With the VGA adapter, I will be able to connect the Ipad to the Smartboard, allowing us to use it as a whole class interactively. The speakers and headphones will help me to provide audio modifications for my students who benefit from having texts read to them and hearing information. Their reading skills are low, so audio helps to increase their reading comprehension. The stylus will allow us to interact with the Smartboard on both the big screen and the iPad screen. We can pass the iPad around as opposed to coming up to the board.
This project is so important to my students because they are highly motivated by the use of technology in the classroom.
I can inspire them to complete assignments when they can use the iPad to complete it. We have many opportunities for online assignments, and if we can project it onto the Smartboard, the whole class can benefit from it. The audio modifications will help my struggling readers who often get lost in higher-level texts. Text-to-speech software will help to increase understanding.
