Hurricane Sandy: Help us Create iBooks and Publish our Writing
My students need a laptop computer where they can log their reading, practice their comprehension skills, and utilize 21st century learning tools to bring their writing to life.
Many of my students are just like me and they lost their homes due to Hurricane Sandy, but they have not lost their will to learn and thrive. We lost our class computer where we would collaborate on lessons using the SMART board. Without our classroom computer, students cannot meet the needs of 21st century. Please help.
I teach gifted and talented middle school students who are in an accelerated program designed to prepare them for college and career readiness.
Many of our students are like me, homeless after Hurricane Sandy. We are struggling to maintain a sense of normalcy, even though we have been relocated to a distant elementary school, where there are no tools for technology available to students. My students are determined not to let these incredible circumstances stand in the way of their success.
My Project
If my students have their classroom computer back, they will be able to continue working on the projects they had been looking forward to: Creating iBooks using iBooks Author, making their textbooks available to other students in our school, working on logging their independent reading progress, completing practice exercises in writing and reading comprehension, and being able to use the SMART board.
This laptop computer will help students be able to type and print their published writing pieces. It is a tool necessary for them to meet the 21st century technology needs that are presented in the Common Core learning standards, and in their future as college students and professionals.
My school has sustained so much physical damage that replacing our classroom computer is not a budgetary possibility until next year at the earliest.
While our school was being repaired, the news reported that looters had stolen technology tools from the building. Our school is lacking the 21st century tools we need. If we have a classroom computer, we will be able to continue the great work we started before the hurricane.
