My students need these calculators to return to school after Hurricane Sandy took away everything they owned. This is a small gesture that would mean so much to them.
Hurricane Sandy destroyed many students' homes in Long Beach and took away everything they owned. They have no clothes, books, or school supplies left. They need to return to school as quickly as possible to give them a sense of normalcy. These calculators will be of the utmost importance.
Long Beach is a town located on a barrier island just below Long Island, NY.
It was estimated that the Long Beach school district was hit the hardest and suffered the most damage out of all districts on Long Island. Students lost their homes, cars, clothes, and everything they owned.
As a teacher in the community, I believe that it is extremely important for schools to reopen as quickly as possible. This will give students a purpose, something to take their mind off their troubles and return to pre-hurricane conditions.
These calculators, though only six of them, are a small gesture that will help a few students out in their time of need.
My Project
Many of the mathematical concepts we learn at LBHS in courses like AP Statistics, AP Calculus, and Algebra II/Trig require strong calculator skills. Without those skills, students will not be able to succeed in class or on standardized exams. If we can purchase a class set (30) calculators 6 at a time, entire classes of students will motivated, dedicated, and excited to come back to school after such a tragic event.
Search for pictures of Long Beach after Hurricane Sandy on the Internet.
You'll see sections of the once famous boardwalk completely destroyed. Boats in people's living rooms. Cars filled to the roof with sand. Long Beach needs hope more than anything else, and these calculators are a small gesture that will give a few students hope for a brighter educational future.
