This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of the school year, I want my students to be fully ready for 8th grade. Beginning this year, the 8th grade students will be learning through the Engage NY curriculum. Our 7th graders need the same advantages Engage NY offers to successfully master our reading standards.

Many of my students come from low-income families who live in poverty stricken areas.

The majority of my students live in a home where Spanish is the primary language and have parents who cannot speak English. Even though they might face disadvantages at home, they are eager to learn - they just need an engaging, rigorous environment to achieve mastery.

My Project

My students need 30 copies of Inside Out and Back Again, A Long Walk to Water, Lyddie, and the Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass for the Engage NY curriculum. My students will be using these novels for the Engage NY Reading curriculum for 7th and 8th grade. Throughout the various modules, students will delve deeply into the texts, connecting the books to themselves, the world, and the media. Each unit has a culminating project that shows student mastery of the novel and the connections they can make with it - such as a research paper or proposal.

Donations to this project will help improve my classroom because it will give each student in my 7th and 8th grade classes enough books for a class set of each novel required to complete the Engage NY Reading curriculum.

It will change my students' lives for the better because it will open several new worlds for them to visualize what their life would be like - whether it be in Vietnam during wartime, a Sudan desert, or 19th century America.
