Our students are amazing! They work hard and try their best, even with limited resources. Although our school has a population that usually receives about 50.5% free or reduced-price lunch, teachers in our building strive to make sure all students have an equal opportunity to learn and reach their goals, no matter their socioeconomic status.
We spend our days with 740+ middle schoolers of different races, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
My job as a teacher is to make sure they all have the same opportunities and an equal playing field to ensure their success! We develop a community of learners by living our school motto on a daily basis: "Work Hard, Play Fair and Take Care of Each Other."
My Project
Research shows that reading is the single best way to improve a child's academic skills. As you can imagine, convincing young teenagers to read can be a challenge. Having books available that our students find interesting is the key to getting even the most resistant readers to become lost in the world of books. All the book titles I have asked for in this project have been specifically requested by our students.
Mustangs who read, succeed!
At my school, we encourage students to carry an independent reading book at all times. In reality, not all students bring books to class. Some of them can't obtain reading materials outside of the school building. Like so many public schools, our district's budget was cut this year, directly affecting our school library's ability to buy new books to keep our collection current. Supporting this project will ensure that we can continue to provide our students with engaging and challenging reading materials.
