My Students
My kindergarten students are creative and curious, sensitive and loving. They are full of energy and potential. They will thrive in the safety and coziness of our classroom as they learn and grow and become readers, writers, scientists, mathematics, and strong, thoughtful members of our school community.
77% of students at my school live at the poverty level, 42% are English Language Learners, and we have a 55% transiency rate.
Trauma, poverty, huge life changes and challenges - these are things I can not change for my students or their families. But, I have the opportunity to create a warm, caring, safe, and secure environment in my classroom and to welcome each child into this learning space with love as they develop and grow.
My Project
Kindergarten students and teachers, spend a great deal of time on the floor, criss-cross applesauce, building that phonemic awareness. They sit gathered together to construct an amazing block structure, elbow to elbow as we share books, ideas, thoughts, and big feelings. Students are sprawled out with clipboards creating and organizing 10,000 snap cubes for a math project. Whatever the reason, having a special place for this work and for all our classroom meetings is so important.
This rug is durable, colorful without being overwhelming, cozy and soft; and it will clearly establish a space in my classroom for so much of our important work.
Thank you so much for your consideration and generosity as I design my new kindergarten classroom!
