My Students

I am the proud teacher of some very special little people. They see the world through rose-colored glasses. They are such a cheerful bunch. I run a special education resource classroom. I am also an ongoing resource for other teachers as they both include my students in their classroom and learn to help all struggling students, not just those with a disability. My little people are my reason for everything I do!

In addition to providing specialized instruction, I am also a behavior interventionist.

I run a specialized instruction program based on a Check-in/Check-out program. This is a scientifically research based program that provides kids with a way to receive continuous positive feedback on their behavior. We call it the "HUG Club." HUG means Hello, Update, Goodbye.

These students range in academic ability levels from Gifted and talented to special education needs students. They are from many different backgrounds. Their struggle, however, is the same. They are struggling to maintain positive behavior in the classroom that facilitates learning. This program increases the number of positive interactions between the students that otherwise might seriously struggle and their teachers. It also allows me to track data on other positive behavior interventions.

My Project

My Check-in/Check-out program runs as follows:

Behavior Targets :

-will raise his hand in class

-will complete his work the right way

-will follow directions the first time given.

1. Goes to Hug Club 1st thing in the morning and picks up a hug card. He reviews his targets and discusses his game plan.

2.The teachers will rate his behavior for each time period (Math, Reading, Writing, homeroom, specials, and lunch/recess; they will initial at the bottom of their column.

3.Teachers will focus on specific Positive praise to shape behaviors at all times.

4.When the HUG card is filled out, teachers will specifically state what behaviors were good and what behaviors he could change.

5.At the end of the Day, will bring the hug card to the Hug Club room. He will discuss what behaviors were acceptable and what behaviors he needed to change in order to get the rest of his points.

6.The student's goal will be 80% of his daily points

7.Hug Club Coordinator will keep track of the number of points that he has. He will get to spend them in the Hug Club store on Wednesdays and Fridays.

8. The behavior card will be sent home daily for parent signature and then returned.

The plan will be considered successful when the student can maintain 80% of his points over 20 days.

The students benefit from the materials being purchased as motivators. They have the option of purchasing from the "Hug Club Store" two times each week with their accumulated points. This assists the students in regulating their own behavior. The program eventually moves them from primary/secondary reinforcement pairing to tertiary reinforcement as they grow through the program. It follows them across academic years as well.
