My students need class sets of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer so they can read the classics. If they don't read them in school today, they won't pass these American masterpieces on to their kids. This would be a tragic loss.

Hooray! This project is fully funded
Television and video games have taken over kid's lives. Help me bring two American classics into the classroom and into the hearts of my students. Help them discover a love of reading for subjects other than wizards and vampires.
My students are bright kids with the potential to break free from the pattern of poverty and broken dreams.
They are inquisitive and want to learn, but fall victim to the idea that society does not care about them. Our school is impoverished and run-down without the resources for anything but the bare necessities. I believe students see the bleakness of their surroundings and lack of materials and equate that to their own self-worth.
As a Social Studies and Language Arts teacher, I will be able to incorporate class sets of "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" into both curriculum's to help meet the common core standards. These books will allow students to read stories they will undeniably enjoy, if not love. Perhaps, the reading and discussing of Twain's classic adventure stories will inspire one or more students to seek out other classic tales.
Without these books, my students will most likely never read a Mark Twain book, or any other classic, which puts our society one step closer to having these American classics fall out of our societal conscience.
I am sure these students will one day pass down their love for these books to their own kids. This ensures that this part of Americana will survive for future generations, no matter what the future comes up with to distract our kids from reading.
