My students are all 10th grade English students plus a 10th grade AVID ELECTIVE CLASS
My goal is to create a safe and culturally diverse classroom.
One way that I am doing this is to teach a cultural unit in which students can choose a cultural book that interests them along with a class text that I will teach from. While reading both texts, students will be able to identify and analyze themes among both texts.
A majority of my students come from many different cultures and beliefs. I would like to open their eyes up to all that is around them and be accepting to different cultures that they are not familiar with.
My Project
Students will read one of the cultural books of their choosing (from our DonorsChoose.org project); creating six groups of six students in each. They will collaborate how many pages they will read within their group and discuss shared themes with the class set, The Joy Luck Club, that we will be reading.
Within their groups, students will be able to discuss shared themes and present their discussions with other group members.
Students will enjoy reading about different cultures and will come to understand that not every culture is the same; and hopefully have a little more understanding for the diversity that is around them.
