"I am a visual art teacher in an elementary school in New York . I teach 400 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. We are a Title I school and we don't have all the supplies that we need. The students are discovering all kinds of shapes and lines and I am interested in expanding their knowledge by providing them a library of how-to books that they can look at and follow step-by-step to create a drawing.

I have modeled the step-by-step process myself using the white board and a dry erase marker to show them how the world is made up of different shapes. This is also an important lesson in teaching them about visual perception and giving each student the tools to observe and make judgments about their environment.

The books that I am asking you to provide us with will enable them to enlarge their vocabulary and explain how they arrived at their finished drawing. It will also give every child in my class the opportunity choose a book that interests them and use it in the class independently.

The books that you will purchase as part of this proposal will give my students opportunities to learn how to follow a step-by-step process similar to that of a narrative procedure that they will use in all disciplines such as math and science. It will also empower them to explain orally how they arrived at their drawing to their family, friends, classmates and teacher. Thank you, donors, once again for making a difference in the lives of New York schoolchildren. We can't wait to thank you by sending you our drawings!
