Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Due to the economic status of some of our families, more than 70% of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. 45% of our student population are English language learners. But these are just stats, they aren't what define our students. Our students come to school eager to learn, to make friendships with their teachers and classmates, and have fun! They are a kind bunch who deserve amazing resources to achieve their learning goals.
In our classroom, we are always striving to provide a 21st-century classroom environment and building up 21st-century learners, so we focus on the 4 C's: critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
Even with all of the great resources we've been able to provide for our students, they need more ways to use their critical thinking skills, have the freedom to be creative, and communicate their ideas with one another to collaborate and achieve a common goal. I also want to provide our students with hands on learning tools to keep them engaged!
My Project
The donations I am requesting for this project will help my students improve their gross and fine motor skills, something thats important in Kindergarten when we're beginning to learn to write, color, and draw. It will also help them with their coordination skills, something that is lacking in this age group.
The success of this project will allow my students to have an engaging experience with multiple types of instruments, something they most likely won't see outside the classroom or experience until the fifth grade when they can join band.
I am excited to give this experience to my students who may be musically inclined but wouldn't know otherwise because they haven't had the opportunity.
I've included the CD (Simplified Rhythm Stick Activities) that has songs that have instructions for when we are using our new Lummi Sticks which are rhythm sticks! All our class will sit in a large circle while we learn and laugh together. I am also requesting a book, Parachutes and Ribbons and Scarves, Oh My!: Listening Lessons with Movement Props, so that we have specific activities to do in class with clear instructions when we use our rhythm ribbons and other instruments for the students. This will help with their listening skills and help them be able to follow two step directions. I've never incorporated musical instruments into my classroom routine so these will give me guidance. The wide variety of musical instruments that comes with the Music Percussion Toy Set include a Xylophone, Rhythm Band, Tambourine, Wrist Bell, Egg Shakers (which I requested extras of), and more. I requested storage bins to put the instruments in so that instead of trying to pull them out of the bag that they come with students will be able to seem them and access them easier!
