This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach immensely intelligent 7th grade students in an extremely under resourced neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York. Nearly all of my students qualify for free lunch and/or began the year far below state standards.
Despite their struggles, I hold my students to exceptionally high standards. I call students scholars, name them after famous colleges and are encourage them to earn PhDs on tests and quizzes. Lucky PhD students then get to act as professors and teach vocabulary to the class.
As a part of the high expectation philosophy, I have my students learning SAT words in 7th grade. They speak "academic english" and relish in their new vocabulary, challenging each other to learn and use new "scholarly words." Their enthusiasm has grown but unfortunately, my resources have not.
I am asking for your help in increasing my inventory of student dictionaries. My students need this to push themselves towards grade level reading, writing and speaking and even beyond. With your help I will ensure that my students do not leave my class years behind grade level. With you, I can move them from struggling readers, writers and speakers to successful scholars-- and one day, college graduates.
Please help me bring my students up to grade level. Please help me bring success to their academic lives. Please help me help them. Thank you.
