Ms. Kane from New Orleans LA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.

How Did We Happen to Get Here?

Help me give my students the opportunity to read about Darwin and the "Origin of the Species" and think about where we, as a species in the Cenozoic Era, are headed.

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I directly teach gifted students from pre-k to eighth grade. Indirectly, I teach a lot more, since my classroom is in the hallway and everyone stops to see what my students are working on.

Some teachers think I have an ideal teaching life because I work with gifted students, but gifted kids can be very challenging.

They're bored if the work is too easy, they love to banter and out smart one another.

On the good side, I don't have to push too far before I see their brilliance. I think they teach me as much as I teach them.

My Project

My students will explore the history of the universe through readings, research, science experiments, and studying and creating timelines.

Each student will decide on his/her specific area of inquiry as they gather information, write reports, and create presentations about an era that sparks their interest.

In the culminating project, students will create a timeline to present to younger students that will give them a picture of the past as well as an understanding of the time it took for our world to develop to this point.

Students will present their findings in research reports along with science experiments in chemistry, such as carbon dating, and classifying rocks and fossils using the Dancing Bear Fossil Collection. Of course, we'll make a volcano using the ETA hand2mind volcano erupting kit. The goal is for each student to "be the teacher" and teach the group about his/her findings.

I chose this project because the students have expressed interest in cosmology, chemistry, the Big Bang, and Charles Darwin. I thought it would be a great jumping-off point to do something inquiry-based. History, science, math, and research writing are just some of the skills that will be used in this project. Currently, we have very little in the way of research material since we don't have a school library. In order to better understand the world in which we now live, it's important for students to know how change has happened, and consider their roles in the universe of the future.
