My 7th and 8th grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our students are diversity personified: from painfully shy to audacious; from studious to silly; from spoiled to neglected; from being treasured to experiencing neglect and trauma. Recently, several students have had parents deported, and they don't know when or if they will see that parent again. When they arrive at my door each day, some are ready to be challenged and others are ready to be challenging!
It's so important to give students a reason to come to school every day, and I believe a vibrant Home Economics elective is just the thing to motivate them to walk through the door in the morning.
My Project
My Home Ec students use Chromebooks for many different activities. Just last week, they researched different food-borne pathogens and how to prevent illnesses when cooking. This research project would not have been possible without working Chromebooks. Unfortunately, two of our devices no longer power on, so not every student is able to get their hands on a device.
From researching recipes and nutrition information, to project ideas for potential entrepreneurship, to creating button and t-shirt designs and sewing projects, Chromebooks unleash waves of creativity that would be simply impossible without them.
Science and math are the underpinnings of many of the activities we perform in Home Ec: measurement, fractions, nutrition, chemical reactions and changes, and much more! What better way to get hands-on STEM skills than cooking nutritious foods and designing and creating projects?
