How Can Headphones Unlock Literacy?

Help me give my students headphones with speech to text capability to unlock their creative writing and reinforce reading.

My Project

You might be thinking, how can headphones affect literacy? Well, I have the privilege of serving some very amazing students. They are creative, smart, math whizzes and great debaters. They also happen to be dyslexic. Dyslexia affects 1 in 5 and can make elements of reading, writing, and spelling excruciating for some. These kids have the desire and effort for literacy, but the task of reading and writing can take much longer than other students and that can be discouraging. These characteristics are unexpected when considering their intelligence level.

Headphones with speakers would greatly improve my students' classroom experience.

Many have their creative writing hindered because they are afraid of spelling rich vocabulary words. The rate of their writing can be laborious and stifle their imaginations. If students could speak their stories into the headphones, their ideas can take flight. Easing the writing task in class can make way for my students to keep up while getting the therapy they need with me.

The English language is filled with irregular spelling patterns which are difficult for dyslexic students to decipher. During my time with students we tackle these complex patterns, but being able to see how the words they speak into the headphones are actually spelled will help reinforce correct spelling patterns and improve their overall spelling.

Research has proven that reading along with an audio text can strengthen skills in dyslexic students. Headphones would provide the opportunity for my students to bolster their reading skills without being embarrassed in their classroom.
