My Students

I wrote a grant for AP computer science texts, started a computer science club to introduce students to computer science and got 60 students to register for the new course. Now- all we need is computers to run the class in teams.

The students showing an interest in computer science are not always traditional students.

There are no programs like this in our state at this time. Our school is described as an innovative, technology school and this would give them another step ahead. Funding is limited and there is a lot of emphasis on testing and the core subjects. The students want to see more relevant, real applications of their curriculum. They want to explore technology and there are few ways for them to learn more in our setting. Having a computer science club and AP computer science class, introduces students to a world of possible, high paying jobs they may never have considered.

My Project

The students will use the computers to test the software applications they write. Students will be expected to work in teams to write programs or code. They will also have opportunities to learn Scratch, Java and develop their own games using Alice. The texts for the AP computer science class were given as a grant. These resources are not enough to run an entire class of 20-30 students. The students present hour of code lesson at the elementary schools. the laptops will help with these hour of code presentations.

These computers give the students additional opportunities and an introduction to an entire range of jobs they might not consider or even know exist without having a class, instructor and materials to explore a whole new field.

Industry needs computer majors and our students need jobs- here is a great way to begin matching students for future jobs. the computers will help the Computer Science Club promote Computer Science throughout the state.
