My Students

I have several classes of energetic, curious and adventurous middle school students. They are always looking for something new and big to do and learn. Many of them come from difficult backgrounds with less than normal living experiences. For many, coming to school is a way of escaping their everyday world. They feel safe in my classroom, they trust me and they know that I deeply care for them.

My students have a new appreciation toward learning music and they are always looking for the next big opportunity!

Once we learn a skill or concept, we build on it and add the next challenge. A majority of my students are not exposed to a wide variety of music. Many would start the school year saying, “I don’t like music” or “I’m not good at this.” Those same kids leave my room at the end of the year and continue with music by either joining an ensemble for the next school year, taking private lessons or playing an instrument at home.

My Project

For the next phase of our steel drum band, we are looking to add a set of timbales. Latin percussion instruments such as bongos, timbales, and congas will allow our students to perform a wider variety of steel drum repertoire. Not to mention will add another instrument for another student to play!

The timbales are such a versatile instrument, they can be used in so many different styles of music.

I teach my students about rhythms, style, and sound production using many kinds of drums. The timbales have such an interesting set of musical colors, and they add so much to any ensemble. The way they are played using the side of the drum with a cáscara pattern, or a clave rhythm on cowbell and woodblock, takes coordination and a strong sense of rudimental knowledge. This instrument uses a great combination of many percussion skills!

The Latin Percussion company (known as “LP”) has the top reputation for instruments in this genre. They have some of the best quality instruments, and every school across the country uses them! We have some exceptionally gifted music students who really just love to learn music. Adding a set of LP timbales is the perfect way to accomplish that! Thank you for your support!
