Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Five years ago our school was one of the lowest performing schools in the state of Colorado. Thanks to the leadership of a new principal, hard working teachers and great students, we are making great strides in our performance. Three years ago the school added a small high school which will graduate it's first class in 2010. I am the high school art teacher. My students continually surprise and inspire me with their art and spirit.

We are a Title One school with many of our students juggling jobs, family obligations and school. Most of them are completely committed to graduating from high school and exhibit astonishing dedication and intelligence. They face many challenges outside of school and having access to art gives them the much needed opportunity to express themselves freely. For many of them, it is the one place where they can truly shine and feel confident about themselves and their talents.

The addition of a printing press to our studio would open a lot of doors for potential projects. Currently, we do not have a press and can do only very basic printmaking. In addition, it will give our students the opportunity to build more thorough and impressive portfolios in the event that they want to attend art school after graduation.

Your donation will make it possible for my students to explore themselves and the world around them more deeply. They are such amazing and intelligent kids and I feel really lucky to have the opportunity to teach them about art. With your help we can give them an even better art education, which they absolutely deserve.
