Ms. Wheeler from Indian Head MD is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to see the connection of their Skip the Straw campaign and the wildlife in the ocean that they are protecting.

We are a semi-rural school only 18 miles from Washington, DC. Our school has a unique, diverse population. Not only have we had the highest number of homeless students and special needs population, we have been attracting many Spanish speaking students and students coming from the nearby county. Around half of the students qualify for the federal meal program.
Our community of students learns best through experience.
Countless examples prove that our students need to be actively engaged in their learning through touching, building, testing, and designing. We are actively involved with environmental projects as a green school.
My Green Team has worked diligently on reducing the number of straws used in our school and community. In our school alone, we reduced the use of 5000 straws in just one month. Our county commissioners are recognizing our team as they proclaim Earth Day as Skip the Straw Day for Charles County, Maryland.
It's time to see the impact of plastics in our waterways as we travel to the shore to witness the amazing interdependence of the endangered red knots and horseshoe crabs!
If we Skip the Straw, we save our waterways and wildlife. Straws are one of the top 10 pollutants in the ocean. Our students see it as a gateway plastic. On our field trip, we will tally, document, and submit our data for the amount of plastic on the beach. We will also be making the area a safer place for the migrating red knots and emerging horseshoe crabs.
