Our special education school houses three classes of 6:1:1 self-contained students, all diagnosed on the autism spectrum and delayed in the areas of cognitive, communication, and social-emotional development. Our students, teachers, and paraprofessionals are proud members of our school community and are located in eastern Queens. Currently, my students are all Kindergartners.
Knowing our students' individual differences helps us to push each one to reach for new heights each and every day!
Each student works daily to overcome personal challenges, such as appropriately greeting a classmate or independently washing his own hands, as well as to meet the expectations that we set for each one, such as tolerating new foods during mealtimes or learning to write his name.
Our school is much like a family and our teachers, administrators, related therapists, and paraprofessionals work together to help our students to excel, to become integral members of their community, and to form closer relationships to their families and friends.
My students with autism have delays in all developmental areas, including communication, physical development, cognition, and social interactions. Our teachers, paraprofessionals, related therapists, and the students themselves work tirelessly to increase skills in all of these areas, capitalizing on students' many strengths and becoming more independent community members. All of my students receive some combination of speech therapy, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
There are so many benefits that come with horseback riding therapy and my students are ready to experience them with Seaside 4 Therapeutic Riding, Inc!
These visits will be exciting and engaging for our students, none of whom have had access to hippotherapy in the past. They will be introduced to horses, petting, grooming, and feeding them. They will learn how to interact with the horses, as well as to ride them. These visits will open up a new world for my students!
