My Students
Our school is a large, urban, public school with almost three thousand students. Our population is incredibly diverse with students walking our halls from almost every continent. Despite the many challenges they face, they all tend to have one thing in common and that is a desire to do well and be successful.
Like so many urban schools, our funding can be limited and as an ELA teacher getting enough books that the children can actually take home and read is always a problem.
So many of the students ask if they can take the book home and it is always difficult for me when I have to tell them no and explain why. These are great kids and should have the same opportunities regarding literature that's afforded to those living in other school districts.
My Project
Inspiring students to read in this modern world of technology and instant gratification is challenging. Often by Senior year students have had enough of the classics, and may even feel that they have had little say in what they got to read. With college on the horizon it is important to show them that English classes and reading can reflect their own interests and even inspire them to read on their own, outside of school.
These books, Watchers and Something Wicked This Way Comes, are designed to reignite an interest in reading by showing them how powerful words can be and how with the right story and a little imagination they can create the ultimate reading experience.
