My Students

Imagine introducing a child to art for the first time. During the first month of school one of my Head Start students did not speak to his classmates or me. Everyday he went straight to the art center and finally spoke his first words to me in October. He said, "Me and you happy painting."

I teach Head Start in a rural community.

My students ages are 3-5 years old. They are energetic, inquisitive, and crave a daily comfort zone. My students come from low-income underprivileged households. Our main goal is promote kindergarten readiness and to prepare these students socially, emotionally, and cognitively.

My Project

Most of my students have never been exposed to art materials in general. I pulled out paint for a project in September and a student asked me, "What is that?" The art easel will expose my students to various types of art and self-expression. They will be able to do easel painting and dry erase marker or chalk drawing which will enhance pre-writing and art skills. I believe this is important in the growth of their early language and creativity development. We also conduct circle time at various points throughout our day. The Alphabet and Numbers Rug will be an effective visual resource to reinforce language and math. We can use this rug for various games, circle time, and music/movement. It will help to make learning fun. Finally, the ABC trace and touch cards will be another tool for visual and also tactile learners. Learning the alphabet is essential for kindergarten readiness.

I feel these items will help my students grow and learn in a variety of ways.

The age range and types of students in my classroom will tremendously benefit from these educational tools. This will be the first time many of them will ever see an easel or be exposed to language or the alphabet. It is my role to prepare these students to the best of my ability for school. They deserve every opportunity and the tools they need to get a "head start" as they enter into kindergarten.
