As the school librarian, I am always looking for fun ways to encourage my students to read more and more and more! One of the programs my school uses to accomplish this is the Accelerated Reading program where students read books of their own choosing and then they take a short little quiz to measure comprehension. The kids LOVE it! As they achieve points from taking the quizzes, they accumulate points which then earns them PRIZES! I would love to have a better selection of prizes to choose from when they do this.
Reading and building reading comprehension skills is our number one prize for participating in Accelerated Reading; but the kids also like the thrill of building their points and THEN getting to choose a prize that they can see, keep, and play with which is why we need MORE prizes for them to win!
I hope to get this project funded so they can have small stuffed animals, pop-its, fidget spinners, multi-colored pens, etc. to choose as their prizes. We all like to win prizes and kids are no exception. Yes, they build up their reading skills and yes, they get to be engaged with more and more books which is the MAIN goal, but there is nothing wrong with having a little fun, winning some cute prizes, and wanting to challenge yourself! Our school has had a lot of success with the Accelerated Reading program as a motivation tool to encourage the students to read independently and they are always visiting the library to tell me about the books they have read while looking for their next literary adventure! I love to see the excitement in their eyes and hear their conversations about the books that they are falling in love with as they read!
