My Students

Remember learning math as a six year old? It is almost impossible for a first grader to understand a math concept without using a hands on approach!

My classroom is a diverse make up of 20 first graders.

They come to school each day excited to see what's in store for the day! Our day is packed full from the moment the bell rings. I am amazed by how much they learn and do each day. First grade today is totally different from my first grade experience. We expect so much more from today's students! I teach in a title one school in a small town in Alabama. My school is a happy place where everyone goes above and beyond to meet the needs of our students.

My Project

It is almost impossible for a first grader to understand a math concept without using a hands on approach. Common core math standards require our first graders to really understand why an answer is right and explain how they got to that answer. No longer are students simply memorizing a set of facts. Today's students are learning and using multiple math strategies to solve math problems. Common core math is a far deeper sense of understanding that pushes first graders to a whole new level. My first graders will actively use these ten frames during whole group and small group instruction. It will help them to deeply understand the math curriculum.

Using a hands on approach will help students to make sense of the "making ten" strategy which will in turn help them master many first grade math standards.

Your donations will help students learn math in a fun way!
