Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school come from unique and diverse backgrounds. Together, they are an amazing group of individuals with various needs, interests, perspectives, talents, and struggles. Many of our students have limited book access, and ALL can benefit from more exposure to new, exciting, and engaging literature. We need books that students can read that are engaging, and inspire more reading. We need current literature that can be read aloud, creating a sense of community, in shared reading experiences. We need book variety that inspires a love of reading and creates reading inspiration and interest. With the current state of schooling, kids are beyond resilient. Creating libraries and opportunities to listen to stories, with book selections that interest all students, will change lives forever.
My Project
Many of my striving readers are in 5th grade and are very interested in history, but also love graphic novels and pictures in the informational text. These books will help students to love reading, and to learn history!
This collection of books features biographies of people they have expressed an interest in, graphic novels (perfect for striving readers, and always a first choice), and picture books about historical time periods and events.
Reading about the past helps our readers to learn about people to emulate, and admire, to question, and to seek answers. Reading begets more reading and questioning, which is what we want for our students.
