My school would be considered high poverty, at-risk and very diverse. I see my school as at-promise, challenged economically and rich with culture. We serve students from all over the world with our ELL population along with many cultures from right here in the United States.
At our school we have students from more than 19 countries around the globe.
As English language learners, books are so important to my students and are truly valued. I am the librarian at a K-5 elementary school. Our school library is an essential resource for my students. Many of my students do not have access to books at home and rely on our school library to check out high-quality books. It is important to have a diverse collection so that students see themselves in books, that way books become relevant to their lives and instill a lifelong love of reading.
Many of my students struggle to finish a book and build up their stamina in reading. One way to help increase student interest and stamina is by offering more of a selection of books that come from a series. When a student gets "hooked" with a book, their stamina will increase having the sequel or next in a series to keep them reading.
Once a reluctant reader is hooked with that special book in a series, they continue reading as their confidence builds.
The more they read, the more it becomes apart of their daily life.
I have chosen books from series we already have in the library, as well as brand new series to entice students to follow their interest throughout the books they come to love.
