I am looking to create a library of books that will peak students' interests about upcoming units of American History. Teaching middle school students from a wide variety of backgrounds and reading levels, I am always searching for books and materials that will captivate, motivate and educate our unique learners.

By immediately engaging students in upcoming units, they become self-motivated and naturally familiar with the vocabulary and background information needed to increase their feeling of success when we approach the standard grade level history text book. Students often miss out on the overall experience of American History because they get lost in the facts and dates. Providing an action-packed supplement to state adopted curriculum will help bridge the gap between the important events that define our nation’s story and the satisfaction of truly identifying with and understanding historical themes.

Of the books that I have brought in from our local public library, the “You Wouldn’t Want to …” series has proven to be the most popular and frequently requested. This series has the perfect combination of informative text and kid-friendly features, using tactics such as vibrant illustrations, modern humor, and gory details to draw students into history. I would like to include five copies of each of the following titles in our Classroom Social Studies Library: You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Mammoth Hunter! You Wouldn’t Want to Be an American Colonist! You Wouldn’t Want to Sail on the Mayflower! You Wouldn’t Want to Be an American Pioneer! You Wouldn’t Want to Be a Civil War Soldier!

This highly motivating and engaging series would be used throughout the year, either to introduce upcoming units or to review or provide research materials for previous units. These books can also be used as a tool to teach students the format of informational texts as it includes headings, subheadings and captions to organize information.
